Snooker online: rules in short
Snooker is played on a large table with 22 balls: the cue ball, 15 reds and 6 colours (yellow, green, brown, blue, pink, black). On 8pool you get a full frame, with the physics of a 12-foot table and the WPBSA rules.
The goal
Score more points than your opponent. You alternate between a red (1 point) and a colour of your choice. A potted colour goes back on the table while reds remain; once the reds are gone the colours are potted in order and stay down:
| Ball | Value |
|---|---|
| Red | 1 |
| Yellow | 2 |
| Green | 3 |
| Brown | 4 |
| Blue | 5 |
| Pink | 6 |
| Black | 7 |
The maximum break is 147 points.
How a game goes
- You start in the "D": the cue ball is placed inside the semicircle, behind the baulk line.
- After potting a red you name the colour you will try (an optional rule: when it is off, the first colour hit counts).
- If a ball blocks your direct line, you are snookered: you must play off a cushion.
Fouls
A foul (cue ball potted, wrong ball hit first, no ball hit...) is worth at least 4 points to your opponent, more if the wrong ball is worth more. After a foul the opponent may face a snooker position (free ball) or get the cue ball in hand.
