9 ball online: rules in short
9 ball is played with nine numbered balls and the cue ball, racked in a diamond. It is fast and tactical: every shot must hit the lowest-numbered ball left on the table first.
The goal
You win by legally potting the 9, even in a combination with other balls or off a rebound. There are no groups and no called pockets: the other balls can go in any pocket, and only matter if they help you reach the 9.
How a game goes
- The diamond is broken with the 1 at the top and the 9 in the middle.
- You always hit the lowest ball remaining first.
- If you legally pot a ball you keep shooting; if not, the turn passes.
Push out
After a clean break, the player taking the second shot can call a push out: the shot is exempt from the usual rules and the opponent chooses whether to play from the resulting position or make the other player shoot again. On 8pool it is an optional rule, on by default.
Fouls
- Not hitting the lowest ball first.
- Cue ball potted or off the table.
- No ball reaching a cushion after contact (if nothing is potted).
After a foul the opponent has ball in hand. Three fouls in a row lose the game.
