8 ball online: rules and how to play
8 ball is the most popular pool game in the world. On 8pool you play it in your browser, with nothing to download, against the bot, against a friend (with a link) or in a random online match with an Elo ranking.
The goal
You play with fifteen numbered balls and the cue ball. After the break, the first player to legally pot a ball picks a group: solids (1–7) or stripes (9–15). You win by potting all the balls of your group and then the 8 ball.
How a game goes
- The first player breaks the rack; the cue ball starts behind the head string.
- If you pot a ball of your group you keep shooting; otherwise it is your opponent's turn.
- To pot the 8 you must call the pocket (an optional rule, on by default: you can turn it off when you start a game).
Fouls
- Cue ball potted or off the table.
- Not hitting a ball of your own group first.
- No ball reaching a cushion or being potted after contact.
After a foul your opponent has ball in hand: they can place the cue ball anywhere.
How you lose
You lose by potting the 8 too early, potting it in the wrong pocket, or committing a foul while potting it.
